If you take lots of pictures with your digital camera, then you need to know your options when it comes to memory cards. Most of the pictures you take will be stored on a memory cards instead of the camera’s built-in memory. Memory cards come in different shapes and sizes; the right one for you will depend on your camera’s requirements. Capacities vary widely; how much you need depends on how you like to take and organize your shots.
With very few exceptions, the onboard memory of digital cameras is very small. Ever since the resolution hit multiple mega-pixels, manufacturers never intended for you to store your photos on the built-in memory. Cameras were designed to accept tiny memory cards to hold most of the photos. There were a couple of advantages to this design. First of all, it meant that your camera memory became almost infinitely expandable, since you could own and use multiple memory cards. The removable cards also made it easier to share and print photos.
However, there were various configurations of memory cards. In the early days of digital cameras, there was competition between card styles and you had to pay careful attention to the type your camera used. Most of today’s models seem to have settled on the Secure Digital standard. These tiny cards are available at bargain prices and hold a phenomenal amount of data.
So the question is, how much capacity do you really need? There are a couple of things that will determine the answer to that question. First of all, the higher the resolution of your camera, the more memory card capacity you will need. For example, a camera that shoots at 12 mega-pixels will need a larger memory card than one that only shoots at 3 mega-pixels. You also have to decide how you intend to use your memory card. Do you want one huge card to keep all your photos, or would you rather use an assortment of smaller capacity cards to organize your photos by activity or location?
Regardless of which way you choose to use your memory cards, you should have no trouble finding great bargains on good memory cards, both online and at your local electronics stores.
